A cyber early warning system works like an invisible radar, scanning the expanse of cyberspace, capturing faint signals and converting them into concrete actions before danger becomes unavoidable. It is not a matter of magic, but the product of a deliberate, methodical process that intertwines an understanding of the most critical assets, the ability to collect data from a wide range of sources, and a refined analytical capability able to separate background noise from the signals that truly matter.

The first awareness an organisation must develop concerns precisely what it intends to protect. This stage goes far beyond a simple inventory of hardware and software: it means mapping with surgical precision the systems, processes, and datasets whose compromise would have significant, if not devastating consequences. It is often at this stage that blind spots come into view: outdated infrastructure still in service, undocumented critical dependencies, or data flows that cross jurisdictional boundaries without adequate safeguards. Once identified, these elements become the anchor points around which the radar is calibrated.

An effective early warning capability cannot depend on a single source. Finally, a cyber radar should not work in isolation. Sharing intelligence with trusted communities, sector-specific ISACs, and national CERTs amplifies the capacity for early warning, transforming each signal detected by one participant into an alert that benefits many. It is an approach that multiplies both the reach and precision of the system, turning defence into a collective and coordinated exercise.

Building an early warning system means equipping yourself with a capability that unites technology, methodology, human expertise, and cooperation. It means choosing not to be caught unprepared by the next threat, but to spot it while it is still far off. It is the difference between sailing blind and plotting a course with a radar always switched on, guiding the organisation through an increasingly complex digital sea.
